In vivo Microdialysis

Microdialysis is a technique to monitor the neuro-chemical dynamics in the living brain. Under normal circumstance, the semi-permeable dialysis probe in anchored into the target brain region via craniotomy. A syringe pump provided a stable source of artificial cerebral spinal fluid (aCSF), via the phenomena of diffusion, small quantity amount of neurotransmitter ( or small molecular weight neuropeptide) could be collected and analysis using the HPLC-ECD system. With the usage of microdialysis technique, scientist can monitor the dynamic change of a given neurotransmitter in a specific brain region. The data is recorded while the animals are living, conscious, and psychologically active!
